There is no doubt about the importance of activity as a vital part of health and healthy weight loss. However, for optimum fitness and a lean muscular body, we need to add aerobic and resistance exercise to the mix.
Aerobic exercise is not what most people think. It is not aerobic dancing or step classes. ‘Aerobic’ means ‘with oxygen’. This refers to exercise performed at a pace where the heart and lungs can deliver oxygen to the muscles at the required rate and avoid shortness of breath.
Exercise becomes ‘anaerobic’ exercise when performed at an intensity where the body cannot keep up with oxygen demands. As a result, the muscles are working in the absence of sufficient oxygen, because there is not enough oxygen being delivered to the muscles during the exercise.
